RSS Feeds and Syndication

Sharing content between web sites is called syndication. Licensed content like newspaper columns and personal information from weblogs can be syndicated. Distributing content with RSS to many viewers is a great way to increase the exposure of a web site.

RSS content providers like Slashdot, the Motley Fool, Wired News, and Linux Today use syndication to circulate headlines and links to news stories on their sites. RSS has become a popular way to publish online with many capitalising on its ability to increase site traffic. RSS has succeeded rapidly because it overcomes many problems simply for readers and publishers.

Cutting and pasting HTML from a Web site into your web page is a tedious way to create up to date content. Knowing when to update a page was a cumbersome manual procedure before RSS (Really Simple Syndication) evolved.

RSS feeds ensure the information displayed is always up to date. There are several formats and methods to add or distribute content to/from a website. The best way to start is to begin a blog at one of the free blogging sites. Most blogs provide links and information to add the content from your blog quickly and easily to your website.

  1. Create a blog at a weblog that provides the services you require.
  2. Add the news feeds or publish your own information.
  3. Use RSS to link your blog to your desktop aggregator.
  4. Enjoy reading the news you are all done.

It will take some time to sort through the feeds available to locate what you want/need. There are feeds on every subject imaginable. Once your blog is populated with RSS feeds it takes very little to include large volumes of up to date content to your web site.
