When we created the BlogBank we created a forum to report on our testing of a wide range of free services. We no longer maintain the original greymatter forum. Free blogging and web hosting is good but after hours getting a website running it is disheartening to see it disappear overnight. In fairness to providers the majority of Free services close because users abuse the system. Sending SPAM and distributing malicious code gets the IP address banned making all of the sites inaccessible. We found that the turnover of weblogs and free web hosting services was extremely high.

There are still plenty of free web hosting providers out there like Memebot who offer a good service free of advertisements but very few offer a full service with C-Panel, CGI, Scripts Centre, PHP and MySQL databases. Besides offering limited services the biggest problem we found with free web hosting was the closure rate, a real problem if it is a service you rely on and it always takes time and resources to setup the site in a new location. Free web hosting is great as a platform for experimenting and learning.

Free web hosting providers worth considering are Yahoo Geocities, Memebot, 50 Webs and Google Page Maker.
